The Studio Glass movement, which began in the United States in the 1960s, can be cited as one of the catalysts for the development of modern glass in Japan. At the time, glass manufacturing was thought to be something done in factories, but with the development of small melting furnaces that could be installed in private workshops (studios), individual artists, like those working with other materials, were able to carry out the entire process from conception to completion.
This art movement spread globally to European countries, Australia, and Japan, and later specialized courses were established within university education in each country. Sadahiko Takahashi encountered glass during the early days of studio glass in Japan and has since continued to lead the Japanese glass world. His works are highly acclaimed and held in museums around the world.
While Sadahiko Takahashi is also known for his solid color expressions and strong artistic image, we specifically requested tableware for this trunk show. What we particularly want to draw attention to is the “cup” featured in the main visual.
Mr. Takahashi, a master of blown glass, values the dynamism of glass expanding as air is blown into it, while skillfully and precisely controlling his work with superb balance in usability. From the tactile aspects of a pleasant feel on the lips and in the hand, to functional points such as the drinking angle, transparency, and weight balance, his work is truly what we were looking for! Many customers are captivated one after another. It's understandable that many repeat customers want to choose comfortable items because they are used in daily life.
What can be consistently said about his work is that the glass appears vibrant. By skillfully utilizing fundamental forces such as centrifugal force and gravity, he can shape the material without stressing it, maintaining its fresh state. Mr. Takahashi creates with a lightness as if having a session with molten glass. Please come to the Uehara store to see the fresh expressions of glass, perfect for welcoming early summer. Our staff sincerely looks forward to your visit. (Haruna)
