“Yoshihiko Takahashi Exhibition”

◆

The first solo exhibition by Yoshihiko Takahashi at our store, which we at FFT have long awaited. It is finally happening.

A pioneer who creates everything from art pieces to vessels without distinction and continues to receive acclaim both in Japan and abroad, Mr. Takahashi fully utilizes the medium of glass to create a world of his own.

The immersive experience when his works are displayed together is particularly overwhelming. As is common with exceptional artists, the collection of works itself emerges as a single statement. We are moved by the undeniable intensity that dwells beneath the cool expressions of the glass.

The works in this “Yoshihiko Takahashi Exhibition” use colored glass that the artist purchased and stored for many years when he first started his studio.

Glass takes on color when metals and other materials are added. While there is a method of coloring all the glass in the kiln, combining clear glass with rod-shaped colored glass allows a variety of colors to be incorporated into the works.

These vessels are formed by sandwiching colored glass between layers of clear glass. The thin clear layer on the inside creates depth within the bowl, allowing the colors to emerge softly and beautifully.

Many of the colored glass pieces used date back to the 1980s.

Before being blown, each piece was so dark that it appeared almost black, so as he unearthed the materials that had been dormant for so long, he was reminded of the beauty of their colors.

Some include colors that are difficult to find today, as well as an expensive red containing gold. Using old materials with a touch of modern luxury. This layering of time is also one of the charms of these works.

The color and texture of glass may be something to be experienced rather than simply viewed. Just as one touches the natural textures of food ingredients or flowers, pouring or serving something in a vessel makes the colors and light suddenly come alive.

Because glass is a material that does not easily deteriorate, old colored glass can be used just like modern glass. Several pieces of colored glass from the 1940s, which Mr. Takahashi brought back from the warehouse of the studio where he once worked in Germany, are also being used this time.

There is no major difference in the materials themselves. However, when you think of the time that has flowed through them, their emotional value is immeasurable.

“Art lies in the diversity of the viewer’s perception.”

The act of various users enjoying the ambiguous and beautiful subject of glass in their own way can also be called art.

Looking at the works this time, I, the store owner, was reminded once again that glass vessels are “objects to be used.”

While they are tools for holding food and drinks, they also hold light, color, and time itself. Having such vessels on the dining table aligns with the richness of life that FFT aims for.

We look forward to sharing this wonderful world of glass with all of you. (Igarashi)
