This will be Naotsugu Yoshida's second solo exhibition under the title "What I Want to Create Now," following last year's exhibition.
In karate, there is a stance called "Shizentai" (natural posture). I interpret it as the most efficient state of "emptiness" in order to initiate the next movement. It's not just a loose, natural state. It's an "emptiness" poised for attack.
The more I learn about Mr. Yoshida's work, the more I feel it embodies this "Shizentai."
From Mr. Yoshida's words:
"I create things that make me feel good while making them."
"It's good to decide on sizes and shapes and then create, but perhaps someone else could do that. It feels more like me to create what I want to create at that moment."
"I don't think I have a 'masterpiece,' but when I look at the whole body of work, I eventually feel it's truly mine."
And when asked why he, with his strong artistic sensibility, doesn't create objects, Mr. Yoshida replied,"I think the forms of vessels are beautiful, so they always end up being vessels. I simply prefer the shapes of vessels to intentionally crafted objects."
So, does this mean Mr. Yoshida is "casually" making pottery? Not at all. Perhaps it's because his mind is clear that he can infuse moments of intense concentration into the clay. Without unnecessary touching or hesitation, vessels are thrown with incredible speed and precision. As if the clay were alive.
Mr. Yoshida's responses are akin to those of a martial arts master. I believe it's a perfect form.
Given Mr. Yoshida's nature, for the gallery to request specific works would be the height of boorishness.
As the title suggests, this time too, there are no particular orders. Mr. Yoshida will freely create "what he wants to make now."
To all fans, please look forward to it.
For first-time visitors, please feel free to pick up some classic pieces.
