There is certainly a Japanese sensibility in Naoko Miura's vessels.

Bowls with high feet, covered vessels, teapots, and blue-and-white ceramics.
Yet at the same time, her lustrous black glazes and generous forms also evoke the primitive presence of ancient European vessels.

Japanese and Western.
Old and new.
Refined elegance and rustic simplicity bearing the traces of the maker's hand.

Rather than clearly separating them, she moves freely and smoothly between them. This soft sensibility, which does not remain confined to any single style, is a major appeal of Miura's vessels and perhaps the reason for their enduring popularity.

When viewed as a whole, this collection seems to create a quietlandscape in which memories of different eras and places gently blend within a limited palette of black, white, green, and pale blue-and-white.

"In the creative process, I value the balance between what I can control and what I cannot," says Miura.Outlines shaped with intention, and the flow and gradation of glazes born by entrusting them to the fire. Neither overly refined nor overly reliant on chance, this balance also supports Miura's free and masterful craftsmanship.
