Yuki Kubota, a ceramic artist based in Mashiko.

Mashiko clay is porous, giving her pieces a soft, earthy impression. While her forms utilize the warmth of Mashiko clay, they are also incredibly delicate. The surface is smooth and matte, exuding the elegant beauty characteristic of a female artist.

And above all, Kubota's works are characterized by their beautifully flowing glazes, which appear to seep and blur. She established her current style through repeated experimentation with glazes and ceramic clays.

Kubota says, "I didn't want to use glazes that already had names." She believed it was boring to use existing glazes as they were, when a slight alteration in their mixture could create a different expression, so she boldly challenged herself to create her own unique expressions. This resulted in artistic expressions that set her apart from other makers.

Among existing glazes, there are some that are "less prone to failure." From the perspective of yield and efficiency, it's tempting to use ready-made products, but the adventurous Kubota finds her self-blended glazes, whose expressions change dramatically with temperature and firing, "interesting." We are touched by her approach to creation, as she controls these difficult glazes with skill while enjoying the changes they bring.

Kubota's high level of technical skill is also evident in the forms of her works. She places great importance on the feel and balance when held. Her pitchers and mugs have perfect balance and center of gravity when liquid is poured in. It's no wonder that many repeat customers and those looking for gifts for loved ones choose her pieces.

Kubota says her works are greatly influenced by Scandinavian pottery, and they possess a mysterious charm that blends Japanese and Western styles.

Her standing pieces, such as vases and pitchers, are all one-of-a-kind and are highly popular. Watching their smooth, beautiful curves, one can imagine how they were formed with flowing ease, clearly feeling the joy of their creation.

And for this exhibition, she has revisited her "Pattern" series, which is pictured, after a long time. The bold, glossy flow of the glaze is striking, instantly brightening up any dish! This collection, a fan's dream, allows you to enjoy both the earthy flavor and the intriguing glaze texture.

In addition, there will be many new items from her heat-resistant series, such as round pots and milk pans, making their first appearance at our store.

Please come and experience Kubota's world in person!
Yuki Kubota will be at the store on the first day, May 27th (Sat).
We sincerely look forward to your visit.
