"Shigeru Inoue Trunk Show" 7/9-7/10 @ Uehara Store!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Uehara will be holding a special exhibition, "Shigeru Inoue Trunk Show," by potter Shigeru Inoue from Aichi Prefecture, on July 9th (Sat) and 10th (Sun), 2022.

Working with Mr. Shigeru Inoue and gradually getting to know his character, I've come to think of him as "flexible like bamboo and absorbent like a sponge."

It might be presumptuous of me to say this about someone so much my senior, but he is also a very conscientious person.

At FFT, Mr. Inoue is always popular for his wide range of works that make the most of raw clay.

For this trunk show, I asked Mr. Inoue to "make larger flat plates using the same clay and glaze."

Flat plates are very versatile and sought after by many, especially for restaurant use. However, making them from raw clay, which has disadvantages in terms of plasticity, is frankly very difficult. Managing the drying process during this period from the rainy season to summer is also challenging.

The most popular sizes are large diameters of 7 to 8 sun. The bottom must be completely flat with no footrim and must not wobble. Ease of washing is also important. Since they tend to be heavy, it's crucial to make them as thin and flat as possible, which would also be a challenge with raw clay, which contains many impurities.

Mr. Inoue accepted the request, saying, "I've never made flat plates before, but I'll give it a try!" It must have been truly difficult to complete them in such a short period.

Seeing the final product after much trial and error, I was deeply moved.

I made many selfish requests from a user's perspective, but he truly accepted the order flexibly and absorbed all my demands. Seeing his adaptable attitude, I thought, "I'm so glad I got to work with Mr. Inoue!"

And so, these are the flat plates being unveiled this time.

They come in 6 to 8 sun sizes, with a beautiful green-ash glaze and also popular inka patterns. They are recommended for both home and commercial use. There will be plenty available.

In addition, other popular works will be on display at FFT, including the most popular white mishima 7-inch plates, rice bowls, copper basins, and various cups.

This is a trunk show that we want all lovers of clay to come and see!
