This is woodworker Shibachi Ochiai's first solo exhibition at FOOD FOR THOUGHT. Working in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, he creates "kurimono" (carved objects) using techniques that involve hand-carving shapes with chisels, carving knives, and planes.

When asked about his creative process, Ochiai-san says, "I don't think about how it will be used, whether it's Western or Japanese style. I don't want to dictate how it should be used; I want users to use it freely. It's interesting to see photos from people who use my work and discover, 'Oh, so it can be used this way!'"

So, what does he value in his creation? First, "utilizing the individuality of the material," and then "bringing out the appeal of carved objects."

Carved objects offer great freedom. Hand-carving them takes a lot of time and effort, but in return, the shapes and textures can be infinitely varied—not just circles and squares, but also curves, floral shapes, shinogi patterns, and more. The finished works are creative and elegant, yet imbued with the unique warmth characteristic of carved objects.

No two wood grains are alike. Cracks and knots are also embraced as part of the wood's individuality. Ochiai-san's careful handiwork then transforms these into a finished piece. Even with the same material and finish, each tray is a unique, one-of-a-kind item.

Over time, they develop a deeper patina as you live with them. Especially solid wood materials show significant changes, so they can truly be called "vessels to be nurtured." None of the works are ostentatious; they are all heirlooms.

Such captivating carved works by Ochiai-san are perfect for the "Hare no Hi" (special occasions) from the end of the year to the New Year. With this sentiment in mind, the exhibition is titled "Kotohogu Koki" (Congratulatory Carved Vessels).

Works with lacquer and black oil finishes, which will elevate your Japanese dining experience, will also be featured. Of course, there will also be unique pieces highly popular among Chinese tea enthusiasts. Please look forward to it.

Mr. Ochiai will be present on the first day. We hope you will enjoy conversations with the artist and discover a piece that will last a lifetime.

We sincerely look forward to your visit.
