富井貴志 / Takesshi Tomii

Takesshi Tomii

Takashi Tomii creates his works in Oguni, Niigata Prefecture, a place of heavy snowfall and great beauty. He has many fans for his beautiful and unique worldview, which combines usability and intelligence. What Tomii values most in his creative process is very simple: "to make what he himself wants" and "to create things that, through repeated use, allow the material, the maker, and the user to become an indivisible whole."

The following are the artist's words:
"I want to create things that are pleasant to live with. I want to create things that are at the heart of everyone's daily lives. I think any material is fine, but for me, it happened to be wood. Its feel and subtle scent, and when I look at old wooden objects, they all have a very good character. Things that naturally bring a smile to your face when you pick them up. Things that become even more attractive when they are well-worn and become 'your own' after starting out pristine. That's the kind of craftsmanship I aspire to."

1976 Born in Niigata Prefecture.
1994-1995 Attended high school in Oregon, USA for one year. Developed an interest in wood during this time.
2002 Withdrew from the Graduate School of Pure and Applied Sciences, University of Tsukuba. Studied woodworking at Forest Takumi-juku in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture.
2004 Joined Oak Village Co., Ltd.
2008 Moved to Shigaraki-cho, Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, and established a workshop in Dosenbo, Minamiyamashiro Village, Soraku-gun, Kyoto Prefecture.
