Teary-Eyed Cup

The works by Yoshihiko Takahashi that we are showcasing at this trunk show are made using a technique called "free blowing," where air is blown into molten glass while rotating a rod in the air. Each glass created by this blowing process is unique in the world!

Beyond drinks, these versatile glasses are also a delightful size for serving chilled soups, ice cream, yogurt, salads, or even making mini parfaits. Although made of clear glass, their "lustrous" appearance catches the light, giving them a strong presence.

If you turn over Yoshihiko Takahashi's glasses, you'll notice a small "ponti" mark. A ponti is an iron rod that is attached to the bottom of the glass with a small amount of glass acting as an adhesive, in order to open the mouth of the piece. This charming mark, which resembles a belly button, is a remnant of the free-blowing production process and a testament to its handmade nature. Takahashi intentionally leaves these ponti marks, making it a joy to examine the underside of the glass.

【Brief Biography of Yoshihiko Takahashi】
Born in Tokyo in 1958. Graduated from Tama Art University, Faculty of Art and Design, Department of Product Design, Craft Design Course, majoring in Spatial Design in 1980. After serving as a research assistant in the Spatial Design Department at the same university, he honed his glassmaking skills as an assistant at Glasstudio am Wasserturm (Reichenbach, Germany) from 1982 to 1984. In 1985, he established his studio in Sagamihara City. He served as a professor at Tama Art University until the end of March 2022.
