No. 22 Trapezoidal Cup (Mocha)

Shintaro Enami is a ceramic artist receiving considerable attention at FFT.

As the first apprentice of Tetsuya and Momoko Otani, he spent five years gaining a wide range of experience before becoming independent.

The distinctive flowing-line ridges found in Enami’s work are all carved entirely by hand. The soft expression created by these curves adds a gentle touch to the table.

Many of Enami’s pieces were inspired by his experience raising his own children and incorporate what he has felt and learned through everyday life with them. This trapezoidal cup was designed with a stable shape that makes it suitable for serving baby food and easy for small children to use by themselves.

Its tapered form helps prevent spills, making it ideal for soups, miso soup, and other liquid dishes. Of course, it is also charming when used for serving snacks.

As each piece is handmade by the artist, variations in glaze, color, and size are to be expected.

Care Instructions

This ceramic piece is porous, so its character and appearance will gradually change as it absorbs moisture and oils from food. Because it is susceptible to color transfer, we recommend avoiding strongly colored dishes until the surface has become naturally seasoned with oil.

The more you use it, the more character it will develop. We hope you enjoy this gradual transformation. If you are concerned about staining or odors, soak the piece in water for approximately 10 minutes before use. This can help reduce color transfer and odors while allowing the piece to develop gently over time.

• Born in 1989 in Kobe, Japan
• Studied Chinese at Fudan University in Shanghai from 2011 to 2013
• Worked at the studio of his grandfather, Kenzo Ogawa, from 2017
• Completed the Small-Item Wheel-Throwing Course at the Shigaraki Ceramic Testing Institute in 2018
• Completed the Clay Body and Glaze Course at the Shigaraki Ceramic Testing Institute in 2019
• Studied under Tetsuya and Momoko Otani from 2020 to 2025
