MODERN CLASSIC OVAL PLATE M
The "MODERN CLASSIC" series is entirely handmade by artisans, so there may be slight black spots from iron powder, air bubbles, or traces of glaze flow. Just as the 1900s brocante we aimed for, we value the traces of handcraftsmanship, so please purchase with understanding. All items with safety issues such as cracks, chips, or distortions are removed during inspection.

The "Oval Plate" from the MODERN CLASSIC series. This is the M size.
Our director, Yuko Watanabe, often uses antique French oval plates. She particularly likes the gentle plain white ones from the late 1800s to early 1900s that are not too large, not too narrow, and have an elegant thinness.
Such "just right oval plates" have become highly sought after, and it's difficult to find enough of them even in France.
Therefore, we decided to develop our own. To ensure it complements our popular original café au lait bowls, we matched the glaze, thinness, and feel, refining a brocante oval plate as a base to better suit Japanese dining tables.
This M size, with a long side of about 7 sun (approx. 21 cm), is incredibly versatile. It can be used as an individual plate, for single main dishes, salads, desserts, fruits, rice, or bread. It's truly a multi-purpose size. As shown in the second photo, it also works well for styling by holding salt, pepper, oil, cutlery, and other table items.
Heavy oval plates often end up forgotten at the back of the cupboard, but we utilized 3D modeling to create the perfect balance, making this plate as thin and elegant as possible so it can be a staple on your dining table.
The gentle curve of the rim not only firmly holds dishes with liquid but also makes it easy to handle when bussing, and creates a subtle, beautiful reflection of light on the edge when stacked. They are truly beautiful when stacked, making them ideal for "display storage" in open kitchens or for use in restaurants and cafes.
Beyond main dishes, how about using them for desserts and fruits? They are high-quality Japanese porcelain, a confident creation developed through trial and error with reliable artisans.
The proportions are based on French brocante from the late 1800s to early 1900s, modernized with a commitment to thinness that pushes the very limits before becoming too delicate. While having a soft, smooth, and rounded feel, the details exude a sense of tension.
The slightly grayish-white glaze gives a gentle impression and was designed for versatility in home use. The bottom features a gray "FOOD FOR THOUGHT" logo.
These plain white, thin, elegant oval plates are hard to find, even when you look for them. Brocante pieces with little wear are expensive and difficult to collect in numbers.
We want these to be a staple you can collect, so we will continue to produce them. They are very convenient for families, and also for professional use in restaurants, cafes, and other establishments.
Or, because they are plain and versatile, they are perfect as gifts for weddings or new beginnings!
