Hello, this is Sumire from the staff.
This year marks the 5th annual "Children's Tableware Exhibition" at FOOD FOR THOUGHT.

The poster for the "Children's Tableware Exhibition," which began with the wish for children to "experience authentic tableware from an early age," was the first piece I drew for FFT. This poster, which is special to me, is now in its fifth iteration, and I feel as though I've reached a milestone.

At this milestone, I wanted to try a different approach, so I asked for a theme, and the answer I got back from Igarashi, the representative of FFT, was "Seigaiha."

"Seigaiha" (青海波) is a classical wave pattern that expresses the wish for "peace to come equally, like a calm sea." With the wish that "the path children challenge as they embark on a wide ocean will be as calm as possible, and hopefully filled with exhilarating encounters and happy days," I designed the base pattern to largely maintain the classical style.

Lately, "dull colors" have been in vogue. However, I want children to be stimulated by bright colors that are easy for them to recognize, and to enrich their sensibilities. That's why I used many colors and layered a design where circles trace the arc-like flow of a bouncing "Seigaiha" ball. The circle shape can represent uninterrupted continuity, perfection, and eternity, making it an excellent match for the "Seigaiha" theme.

This painting became filled with many such wishes, but ultimately, I believe the most important thing we adults wish for our children is "to grow up healthy."

Among the participating artists, some deliver new works specifically for this exhibition every year, while others, drawing from their own parenting experiences, select pieces saying, "This tableware should be usable until they become junior high and high school students." All the works convey the artists' intentions regarding "children's tableware." That's why we want to convey not only the objects themselves but also the thoughts of the creators behind them as much as possible.

Meals are a time for communication with children, a form of education, and an indispensable act for healthy growth. That's why I want daily meals to be enjoyable. I hope that children can spend that precious time with tableware they chose themselves, or tableware someone chose for them with love. (Sumire)
