09 Compote Plate (Teal)

FFT is pleased to introduce Shintaro Enami, a ceramic artist.

He is a remarkable artist who, after five years of diverse experience as the top apprentice to Tetsuya and Momoko Otani, has become independent from "Otani Pottery."

Introducing "Teal," a new color debuting at this exhibition.

The pale blue-green glaze retains kiln variations. The granular texture of the surface contrasts with the smooth waves (shinogi pattern) on the rim and foot. This color allows for a richer enjoyment of the expressions created by the way light hits it, more so than Enami's previous works.

The rust-like appearance of the new compote dish evokes ancient ritual vessels and antique footed objects, while its bold simplification of form has a sensibility akin to modern sculpture.

It is perfect for casually displaying persimmons, grapes, or figs, or for serving small portions of ham and cheese, leaving some empty space. We also recommend using it for a rustic presentation of bread or baked goods. Especially when serving irregularly shaped items like grapes or figs, which will be in season soon, the waves of the dish will be further accentuated.

Since this pottery is absorbent, its texture will change with the moisture and oil from food. It is prone to staining, so we recommend avoiding deeply colored dishes until the entire surface has absorbed oil. The more it is used, the more character it develops, so we hope you enjoy these changes. If you are concerned, try soaking it in water for about 10 minutes before use. This will help prevent staining and odors to some extent, and allow it to gradually mature.
